Hunt Monsters

Elements and Abnormal Status

In order to effectively slay monsters, it’s important to gain an understanding of elements and abnormal status ailments.
Attacks of an element a monster is weak to will have increased damage. Meanwhile, making use of abnormal statuses can give you the upper hand during hunts.
During events, etc., some monsters may have greater resistances to certain abnormal statuses. Make sure to check monsters’ traits before hunting.

Elements

The types of elements available for you to use are shown below. Try choosing a weapon of an element that the monster is weak to.

Abnormal Status Elements

The types of abnormal status elements available for you to use are shown below. In addition, using blunt weapons or certain attacks on a monster’s head may inflict stun.

Skills

Some skills can provide the following effects:

  • Increase to elemental attack power
  • Increase to abnormal status buildup amount
  • Increase to chance of abnormal status buildup occurring

*Skills that increase elemental attack power will have no effect on abnormal status elements. For example, Critical Element will only affect elemental attack power.

Many monsters have specific elemental weaknesses. Attacking with a weapon of an element that the monster is weak to will result in increased damage.

Distinguishing Between Elements

Weapons imbued with a certain element will have an element icon on their thumbnail. Get into the habit of checking the elemental weakness of the monster you’re about to hunt, then switching to a weapon that has an advantageous element.

E.G.: Kulu-Ya-Ku
Elemental weakness: Water
Advantageous weapon: Jagras Edge (water), etc.

Equipment Skills

Each weapon comes equipped with set equipment skills.

  • These will become available after upgrading to a certain grade.
  • The skills and grades they will be unlocked at can be checked from the equipment details screen.

There are various kinds of abnormal statuses ailments you can inflict during a hunt.

Characteristics

  • If poison is inflicted, health will gradually be depleted for a certain period of time.

Attacking With Poison

  • Attack with poison element weapons to build up poison.
  • The Poison Attack skill will make this easier to inflict.

Being Attacked With Poison

  • Once a certain amount of poison buildup has accumulated, you will become poisoned.
  • The Poison Resistance skill will make it harder for you to be inflicted with poison.

Characteristics

  • If paralysis is inflicted, action will be restricted for a certain period of time.

Attacking With Paralysis

  • Attack with paralysis element weapons to build up paralysis.
  • The Paralysis Attack skill will make this easier to inflict.

*Monsters will take increased damage if paralyzed.

Being Attacked With Paralysis

  • Once a certain amount of paralysis buildup has accumulated, you will become paralyzed.
  • You can rapidly tap to shorten the paralysis time.
  • The Paralysis Resistance skill will make it harder for you to be inflicted with paralysis.

Characteristics

  • If sleep is inflicted, action will be restricted for a certain period of time.

Attacking With Sleep

  • Attack with sleep element weapons to build up sleep.
  • The Sleep Attack skill will make this easier to inflict.

*The first attack on sleeping monsters will inflict huge damage.
*Attacking will cure sleep.

Being Attacked With Sleep

  • Once a certain amount of sleep buildup has accumulated, you will fall asleep.
  • The Sleep Resistance skill will make it harder for you to be inflicted with sleep.
  • You can use your Special Skill just before falling asleep to prevent it.

Stun

  • If stun is inflicted, the monster’s actions will be restricted for a certain period of time.
  • Caused by blunt weapons, as well as continuously using certain attacks.

Blast

  • If blast is inflicted, the large monster will receive blast damage.
  • Caused by accumulating blast buildup by attacking with blast element weapons.

Tremors

  • Tremors will cause you to stumble and be unable to move.
  • The Tremor Resistance skill will nullify/reduce the effects of tremors.

Wind Pressure

  • Wind pressure will cause you to stumble and be unable to move.
  • The Windproof skill will nullify/reduce the effects of wind pressure.

Roars

  • Roars will cause you to cover your ears and be unable to move.
  • The Earplugs skill will nullify/reduce the effects of roars.

Bleeding

  • You will take bleeding damage each time you attack or evade. You will also take additional damage if attacked while bleeding.
  • The Bleeding Resistance skill will make it harder for you to be inflicted with bleeding.
  • Bleeding will wear off if you stop attacking or evading for a certain amount of time, with any bleeding damage being recovered as well.

Blind

  • The screen will go dark, making it harder for you to see the monster for a certain period of time.
  • You will be unable to lock on, and be unable to attack from Critical Range when using long-range weapons. (If you were already locked on, your lock-on will be removed.)

Bubbleblight

  • You will slide about each time you evade.
  • The Bubbly Dance skill will reduce the effects of bubbleblight, while making it easier to perform perfect evades.
  • With a certain Lv of Bubbly Dance equipped, you will automatically inflict yourself with bubbleblight.

Blastblight

  • You will be inflicted with blast damage after a certain amount of time passes.
  • Evade enough times before the explosion occurs to be cured of blastblight.

Hellfireblight

  • You will take damage after a certain amount of time passes.
  • Evade enough times before the explosion occurs to be cured of hellfireblight.
  • Perform a perfect evade to plant hellfire on the ground. If the monster makes contact with this, it will explode.
  • The Hellfire Cloak skill cause you to automatically inflict yourself with hellfireblight.
  • With a certain Lv of Hellfire Cloak equipped, your attack power will increase while you are suffering from hellfireblight (but your defense will be lowered).

Venom

  • Your health will greatly deteriorate for a certain period of time.
  • Health reduction is greater than normal poison, but lasts for a shorter period of time.
  • The Poison Resistance skill will make it harder for you to be inflicted with venom.
  • If you are inflicted with venom while poisoned, the poison effect will be replaced with venom.

Stench

  • Your Special Skill button will be greyed out and your Special Gauge will no longer fill for a certain period of time.
  • You won’t be able to use your Special Skill even if your Special Gauge is full.
  • While suffering from stench, you will be unable to morph with the charge blade/switch axe, and you will be unable to enter Demon Mode with dual blades.
  • Wears off after a set period of time, or if you faint.

Bloodblight

  • Your current health will be turned into the Blood Gauge. While suffering from bloodblight, you will take damage every few seconds.
  • Attacking a monster will reduce the Blood Gauge, and gaining enough surplus health will cure the bloodblight. Surplus health will be removed at the end of the hunt.
  • Wears off after a set period of time, or if you faint.

About Surplus Health

  • After fully depleting the Blood Gauge, attack even more to earn surplus health.
  • Surplus health is treated the same as normal health.
  • Surplus health will be reduced in priority whenever you take damage.
  • Surplus health will be removed at the end of a hunt.
  • If you are inflicted with bloodblight again, your accumulated surplus health will be removed.

The Blood Cloak Skill

The Blood Cloak skill will automatically inflict you with bloodblight. With a certain Lv of Blood Cloak equipped, your max health will be increased when first inflicted with bloodblight, and your attack power will increase while you are suffering from bloodblight.
