Hunt Monsters

Slaying Monsters

You will succeed in the hunt if you manage to fully deplete the monster’s health before the time limit runs out, and will fail if you aren’t able to.
If you’re having trouble, please read the following information.

You can use recovery items to replenish your health.

Fainting

If your health reaches 0, you will fall down exhausted.

  • Your Special Gauge will decrease slightly.
  • If you have any recovery items, you can use them to get back up.
  • No matter how many times you go down, the hunt will not fail.

However, you’ll need to be wary of the time limit.

Checking your Health

Your health can be confirmed in the following locations. If your health falls below a certain level, you’ll be unable to start a hunt, so you’ll need to recover before challenging.

  • Main screen: Above your hunter’s head (*doesn’t display when health is full)
  • Hunting screen: Health bar in the bottom-center

Recovering Health

You can recover health via the following methods.

  • Use recovery item
  • Wait for a set amount of time (auto-recovery)

Types of Recovery Item

There are two types of recovery items.

Potions
  • May be rewarded when raising Hunter Rank.
  • Purchasable from the shop.
  • No maximum capacity.
First-Aid Meds
  • Automatically supplied until you reach Hunter Rank 11.
  • Supplied each day once you become a fully-fledged hunter (HR 11).
  • Cannot be claimed beyond max capacity.

Usable Locations

First-Aid Meds and Potions can be used at the following places.

  • Main screen
  • Hunt preparation screen
  • During a hunt

*First-Aid Meds will be prioritized during a hunt.
*There is a cooldown between using recovery items during a hunt.

Monsters will glow red before attacking. Use this as a signal to dodge out of the way.

Evasion Basics

If a monster glows red, this means they’re about to attack. Flick right/left/down to evade.

Mastering Evasion

  • Each monster has a set attack pattern.
  • Pay attention to your positioning when monsters glow red.
  • If you’re unconfident about your timing, try attacking from the sides or back rather than head-on.

Visibility

When the gyro is set to OFF or SEMI, you can adjust the camera zoom by pinching in or out with two fingers while hunting.
If you’re too close to the monster and can’t see its movements clearly, try zooming out slightly so you can see its entire body.

Make sure to upgrade your equipment by gathering materials and collecting zenny.

It’s important to challenge monsters using weapons of elements that they are weak to.

Once a weapon reaches Grade 2, you can activate its Special Skill during hunts.

  • Special Skills inflict large amounts of damage.
  • You will be invulnerable while using them.
  • Try building up your Special Gauge by hunting small monsters beforehand.

Long-press on the screen to activate each weapon type’s unique Hold Action.

Example:
Long-press with the Sword & Shield to Guard with your shield.
This will lessen the damage and knockback from attacks.

You can break monster parts by focusing enough damage on a certain part.
If you succeed, you’ll earn Broken Part Rewards in addition to Basic Rewards upon slaying the monster. You can also topple certain monsters by aiming for specific parts, giving you a chance to attack.

Unlock Conditions

  • Rookie hunters (HR ≤ 10) cannot break parts.
  • Fully-fledged hunters (HR ≥ 11) can brake parts.

Part to Aim For

Body parts that can be broken differ between monsters, so do your best to spot their weak part.

Example:
Great Jagras: Stomach
Pukei-Pukei/Kulu-Ya-Ku: Head

*Earned Broken Part Rewards are random.

Breakable parts and weak parts differ between monsters. The best way to gauge whether a body part is a monster’s weak point is to attack it and look at the color of the damage number.

Damage Number Colors

Damage Display Color Effect
White Damage that has neither struck a weak point nor is of an element the monster is weak to
Yellow Damage that has either struck a weak point or is of an element the monster is weak to
Red Damage that has both struck a weak point and is of an element the monster is weak to

*Weapons that inflict abnormal status (Poison/Paralysis/Sleep/Blast) only become elemental attacks at a set chance. As such, even if you attack the same body part, the color may not always be the same.

Example:
When attacking Barroth’s (elemental weakness: Poison) forelegs (weak point) with Blooming Knife (Poison element):

  • Yellow numbers: Weak part, but not elemental weakness
  • Red numbers: Weak part and elemental weakness

Affinity occurs when your attack does more damage than normal (a critical hit).

About Affinity

The chance of a critical hit occurring is referred to as Affinity. The higher your Affinity, the greater the chance of a critical hit occurring.

Raising Affinity

Some equipment skills can increase your Affinity. Try to put together an assortment of equipment and skills that will boost your Affinity.

Perfect evades refer to when you dodge a monster’s attack just before it connects. If successful, you’ll be granted a huge chance to inflict damage. Watch your timing and aim for a counterattack.

Method

The trick to mastering perfect evades is to remember monsters’ attack patterns.

  • If a monster glows red, this indicates that it’s about to attack.
  • Just as the attack is about to hit you, flick with perfect timing to evade.

Effects of Perfect Evades

  • Slow motion will activate.
  • Yellow outline appears around your hunter.
  • Temporarily invulnerable.
  • Attacks following a perfect evade will be stronger than usual.
